Understanding the real barriers to daily devotion
People don’t avoid devotion because they don’t care—it's because they’re overwhelmed, unsure, or unpracticed.
We will attempt to remove these barriers.
Bonus: This lesson may help you in all areas in your life related to commitment.
The Psychology of Avoidance
why “I’ll start tomorrow” feels safer than “I’ll start today.”
Tomorrow has no Emotional Cost.
Tomorrow exists in the imagination and thus, there is no risk of failure there.
This is a common psychological phenomenon that impacts all of us and prevents us from getting beyond the
"I want to" to the... "I am doing"
Starting Exposes Identity
When someone says, "I'll start tomorrow" what they are often protecting is:
"If I try and don't follow through, what does that say about me?"
Starting today risks confrirming a fear that we are inconsistent, not disciplined, or confirms that we "always quit".
Avoidance protects our internal identity.
Shame Makes Devotion Feel like Performance
If devotion feels like:
a test
a streak
a proof of seriousness
Then the safest move is... delay.
Because delay avoids failure.
Schedules Feel Too Short
If devotion feels like a luxury you don't have, discard that thought.
Solutions forthcoming...
I don't Know How
If you have ever hugged someone, you know how.
The guilt for not starting
is heavier than the discipline required to begin.
Tomorrow always feels brighter...
...until it becomes next month.
