What does Mary know?
According to Luke 1:48, Mary’s Song came before the birth of Jesus. It comes before the danger is resolved, before Joseph comes around, before Rome is challenged. It’s a pre-fulfillment worship ahead of any evidence.
Often, in fact most often, scripture is written with some future certainty.
Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Mary’s Song with references:
1:46: She starts off by saying “My Soul glorifies the Lord.” Glorify is to raise, to magnify or bring into clearer focus. We align when we worship as Mary is doing.
1:47: Her Spirit and Soul rejoice. Mary’s inner being agrees with God before any proof the baby is within her. She must have had a divine obstetrician!
1:48: Mary recognizes her situation, her station. She is humble, meek, and poor. It’s true, often God chooses the perceived insignificant to do his calling. Why? Because a humble heart is an honest heart despite your wealth. God never bypasses weakness— he proves through works by the weak time and again are given tremendous blessings.
1:51-53: This is an observation that God scatters the proud, dethrones the powerful while lifting up the humble and the hungry. Mary is speaking about the future as if it is already done.
1:55: Here Mary is showing her knowledge, either learned or inspired, that God is keeping his promise to past and future generations. This clearly speaks to her knowing that the child she is to bear is the Messiah. It also highlights that this song is purely new Covenant thinking—she recognizes the authority in her that has not yet been given to any person alive at that point. She is gifted the Holy Spirit and Christ within her NOW, even before Christ becomes the lamb— before any of us!
This song, this worship, has already defined the birth and what comes after before it has come. This song teaches us to worship before outcomes, to trust God with power and justice and how to truly read the magnificence of Christ’s birth. Mary does not simply celebrate salvation; she announces the kind of world salvation brings. Finally, if our personal Gospel never challenges pride, power, or comfort I would guess we haven’t heard Mary sing!
So Yes! Mary did know!
When We…
Confess we often prefer a Messiah who comforts rather than a Savior who confronts us.
When We…
Confess our desire for strength without surrender.
When We…
Confess our fear of humility.
Then
our Hearts are prepared to receive the Christ
